Frequently Asked Questions
I don’t know what class level to take. Where do I find that information?
First, contact your employer. They are the best source of information about the person you support. If your employer doesn’t know, it will be tough for anyone else to direct you. However, you can always take a Basic, General, or Intermediate workshop then get upgraded as needed.
I need the physical skills taught in an advanced class but I can only find a General or Intermediate level workshop. What can I do?
Take a General or Intermediate level workshop. It may be possible that the person you support has a Behavior Professional that can “upgrade” your certificate.
What is an “upgrade”?
Upgrading a certificate means you have been certified at a lower level but need more advanced skills. An OIS instructor will teach you more physical skills, in a 1:1 or small group setting. The physical skills are taught in a stair-step manner. You
must first learn the less intrusive skills before you can learn the more intrusive skills. Sometimes you will learn the general or intermediate skills in a workshop and then be upgraded, outside of class, for skills you need to work with a specific individual.
I looked on the calendar and still can‘t find a class that meets my needs. Is there anyone to help me?
YES! Please reach out to the OIS Data Coordinator, Sheril Karstens, at ois.asioregon.org. She is a fabulous resource and can help connect you with instructors in your area.
Once I get my OIS certification, can I write OIS physical skills into behavior plan?
No. Only OIS instructors have permission to write OIS physical skills into behavior plans.
